Homeless Services Network Celebrates 30 Years of Service

Anniversary luncheon features nationally acclaimed author and the inaugural Thomas C. Chatmon Jr. Community Champion Award

ORLANDO, FL – On Oct. 27, the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida will mark three decades of helping people experiencing homelessness with “HOMEWARD,” an anniversary luncheon featuring one of the nation’s leading authorities on the current housing crisis among our most vulnerable residents.

The ticketed event will be a rare opportunity to gain insights from researcher Gregg Colburn, the acclaimed author of “Homelessness is a Housing Problem,” whose work has been featured in reporting by The New York Times, the Washington Post, Marketplace and The Atlantic.

The event also includes the inaugural Thomas C. Chatmon Jr. Community Champion Award, an homage to the charity’s late, cherished leader, whose dedication to the cause and to the community has left an indelible mark. The award aims to celebrate and perpetuate his legacy by recognizing those who embody his spirit of service.  HOMEWARD will be hosted by award-winning columnist and humorist Scott Maxwell.

Martha Are, CEO of the Homeless Services Network (a recent finalist for Central Floridian of the Year), can provide an on-air discussion about why the region is seeing a rise in its unsheltered homeless population, despite great progress in recent years in housing military veterans and chronically homeless people with disabilities. She can also discuss what it will take to improve the current situation -- and the potential consequences of not taking action.
